The World Wake Surfing Championships (WWSC) started out yesterday with stacked heats in all of the divisions for Day 1. After all, it's the culmination of what all of these competitors have aimed for during this year's World Series, and it all funnels down into the best of best here in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; as only 10 people ranked high enough in each Division to even receive the invitation to the Championships. The conditions were ideal. Everyone had the same non-issue perfectly shaped wave that consistently arrives from Centurion vessels, like the Ri237 - the official monster maker of the weekend! The weather seemed to park it's thunderstorms off to the West as if they too wanted a glimpse of the shredding. Each rider yesterday did what they do best! You had 20 trick lines flowing seamlessly by many, with the only distinguishing point skewing being variations in amplitude, aggression or style... That being said - We saw some bangers out there and also jaw dropping saves by these professionals in their sport. Day 1 did what it was supposed to do, and that was to simply cull the herd a bit and let the creme rise to the top. Some of the tricks of the day that had onlookers talking were immaculate no-fall runs by people like Chad Hudson, ridiculously sick combos by mega-athletes like Noah Flegel's "Backside Madonna Alley-Oop" (which was just one in his flowing line of ridiculousness), or the unseen double-self transfer from an Air-180 by Jake Breedlove, where he pinned his nose into the hump when he landed the first part - then transitioned reverse - then nollied back across to his original side and Half-Cab 180'd out... definitely one to go check out on the replay of the broadcast. We lost a few great riders to others that just qualified higher, but i'm sure they too will return here for Day 2 to see what these champions give us in the form of Wake Eye Candy.
